The choice of material is a complicated matter, which is why we the advice we provide is based on our broad and long-standing experience as well as the results from tests on the use of different materials under a wide variety of conditions.
In collaboration with our partners, Rottink is able to offer and provide a wide range of materials. These materials were composed in collaboration with partners who have many years of experience, extensive craftsmanship and a deep knowledge of materials. The list below is a limited selection of the materials on offer; the full range is much wider, of course. Any material is available upon request. The material properties depend on aspects such as the (chemical) composition, mechanical properties and any additional heat treatment. Each batch can be supplied with a certificate upon request.
The choice of material depends on several factors. The counter material (the cylinder material) plays a substantial role, for example, but so do the function of the piston ring or the metallic seal as well as the area of application. A piston ring or metallic seal made from the wrong material could cause premature leakage or an increased oil consumption. This would affect both the efficiency and durability of your piston ring or metallic seal. The materials listed below, both ferrous and non-ferrous, are available in a range of tensile strengths and varying hardness.

Each material has its own characteristic properties. For example, Ni-Hard 4 (alternate designations: 0.9630 / G-X320 / EN-GJN-HV 400) has a high wear resistance and a good shock resistance. CuSn12 (alternate designations: 2.1052 / GC-CuSn12), on the other hand, is corrosion and seawater resistant. Each material, whether ferrous or non-ferrous, has its own area of application.
In summary, we dispose of a wide range of available materials, and any additional material is available upon request. You can also select a surface or heat treatment to extend the lifespan and durability of your piston ring or metallic seal and their application. This can improve or extend the area of application of your ring.
