At Rottink, we have permanent partners with whom we realise both surface and heat treatments. These treatments are meant to increase the durability of the piston rings and metallic seals. Several common treatments are listed below; other treatments are available upon request.
Heat treatments are used to adjust the microstructure of materials, thus improving their mechanical properties. Characteristics that can be changed through these treatments include hardness, formability, strength, tensile strength and wear resistance. We also offer surface treatments. These are implemented to protect the surface against harmful environments or improve its properties.
In conclusion, a surface or heat treatment can increase the area of application of your material or strengthen it. Surface and heat treatments can serve to achieve the same goal. The primary difference between these two types of treatments is that a heat treatment affects the whole material, whereas a surface treatment affects only its (visible) surface.
A significant advantage of surface and heat treatments is that a hard surface can be combined with a tough core, decreasing the chances of fracturing.
Our available treatments include, but are not limited to:
By selecting the right material and combining that with a surface and/or heat treatment, you can greatly extend the lifespan of your application. Does the piston ring or metallic seal need to perform in an acidic or aggressive environment? Will the material be exposed to heat? Or does the material require a high wear resistance?
The choice for a certain treatment is based on the intended area of application and the material selected. If you are curious about the possibilities for your area of application, please feel free to contact us.
